Something not adding up?

Where can I get it?

tipstir is out now on Google Play. It is free, with a single banner along the bottom and a one-time $2.99 purchase to remove it. The iPhone version is still to come; this page will say so when it lands.

Why is the tip smaller than I expected?

tipstir calculates the tip on the subtotal, before tax. If your subtotal is $114.87 with $10.19 of sales tax and you choose 18%, the tip is 18% of $114.87, not of the taxed total. The tax is still added to what you owe, it is just not tipped on.

Can I enter the tax as a dollar amount?

Yes. The $ and % buttons beside the tax field switch between the two, so you can copy the figure straight off the receipt instead of working out the rate. Either way the tip is still calculated on the subtotal.

My sales tax rate is not a whole number.

That is fine. In percentage mode the field takes decimals, so 6.625, 8.875 or whatever your county actually charges all work. Enter it once and it stays put.

How does Round it work?

Round it takes each person's share to the nearest whole dollar and works backwards from there, adjusting the tip to match. It then shows you the tip percentage that rounding produced, so you can see whether you have gone up or down. Because it rounds to the nearest dollar it can go either way: a share of $48.58 becomes $49.00 and the tip rises to 19.10%, while $48.30 would become $48.00 and the tip would drop. Tapping the same button again, now reading Reset, puts the check back the way it was.

How do I change my three tip percentages?

Tap Settings at the top right of the main screen. Each of the three rows is a strip of percentages you can slide along; tap the one you want and it turns red, and the waiter on the left of that row takes the new number. They are saved on your phone and are there next time you open the app. A percentage already in use by another row is greyed out, so you cannot end up with the same one twice.

What is Privacy choices?

If you are somewhere that requires consent before personalised ads can be shown, tipstir asks you once when you first open it. Privacy choices, at the bottom of Settings, reopens that form so you can change your answer whenever you like. If consent is not required where you are, the option will tell you there is nothing to change.

I paid to remove ads and they came back.

Open Settings inside the app and tap Restore Purchases. This is the normal step after reinstalling the app or setting up a new phone. On iPhone, make sure you are signed in to the same Apple Account you bought it with; on Android, the same Google account. If the banner is still there afterwards, email us the date of purchase and we will sort it out.

I bought it on one phone. Does it carry to the other platform?

No. Apple and Google keep separate purchase records, so a purchase made on the App Store cannot be restored on Google Play or the other way round. Within one platform it restores across all your devices on that account.

Where did the split figures go?

When the headcount is one there is nothing to split, so those figures step aside and leave the tip and the total on their own. Tap the plus button and they come straight back.

Can I split by more than a handful of people?

Yes. Use the plus button to raise the headcount as high as you need. Every figure on the screen splits with it, and each person's share is rounded up to the cent so the table never hands over less than the check.

Does tipstir need an internet connection?

The calculator works entirely offline, with the phone in airplane mode if you like. A connection is only used to load the ad banner, to show the consent form where one is required, and to process or restore a purchase.

Both are welcome at support@tipstir.com. Feature requests genuinely do get read, and tipstir is small enough that a good one can turn up in the next release.
